Jewish students fear safety amid pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University

'students at Columbia University say they no longer feel safe on campus as protests in support of Palestine stretched into the fifth consecutive day on Sunday....onathan Lederer, a Jewish sophomore at the university, said he and his twin brother, who also attends Columbia, were preparing to leave campus for a week in the hopes that the unrest would be addressed by the school in that time.

“Up until last night, when half the people there are from off campus, a bunch of lunatics who want to cause problems, issues and start a riot, that is when I felt totally vulnerable,” said Lederer. ...'

The Castle Doctrine | Exception to the duty to retreat before using deadly self-defense if a party is in YOUR home

'...restriction on self-defense is the rule to retreat. In jurisdictions that follow the rule to retreat, a party is not entitled to a defense of self-defense unless they first tried to mitigate the necessity of force by fleeing the situation, so long as retreating could be done safely. That said, in jurisdictions that follow the castle doctrine, this restriction has an exception for parties in their own home. A party in their own home does not have a duty to retreat and, therefore, is entitled to a defense of self-defense so long as the other requirements of the defense are met.
